A creative life across music, television, theater, and live entertainment.

Tony James has never been defined by just one role. An actor, musician, singer-songwriter, voice actor, and live entertainment professional, he has built a career across an unusually broad range of creative disciplines—connecting with audiences onstage, on television, in the recording studio, and behind the scenes.

Television and a Lasting Connection

Tony became widely known as the co-host of Disney Channel’s Emmy-nominated children’s series Out of the Box. A three-time Parents’ Choice Award winner, the show encouraged children to explore the world through music, art, storytelling, and imaginative play. Tony also co-hosted two Playhouse Disney Live tours, bringing that spirit of creativity to live audiences.

Years after the show’s original run, its connection with viewers continues. Available on Disney+ since the platform’s launch, Out of the Box has also found new audiences through full episodes on the official Disney Jr. YouTube channel. Parents who grew up watching the series have shared with Tony that their own children have embraced it, too.

That multigenerational connection has found a new expression through social media. Tony’s rendition of the show’s iconic “Goodbye Song” became a viral nostalgia moment, inspiring hundreds of fan Duets and Stitched reaction videos and attracting national media attention, including coverage by Access Hollywood. With more than 347,000 TikTok followers, Tony continues to connect with longtime fans and a new generation discovering the show.

Music, Songwriting, and the Stage

Music has been a defining thread throughout Tony’s career. Before his television success, he joined the original American cast of the theatrical phenomenon STOMP, an experience that brought together rhythm, movement, performance, and inventive musical expression.

As a musician, Tony’s work has included session recording, touring, live performances, and musical direction. He has worked with artists including Cyndi Lauper, Billy Squier, Brenda K. Starr, David Yazbek, Joy Harjo, Charles & Eddie, Dave Koz, Darden Smith, and Jeffrey Gaines. His performances with poet, musician, and former U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo have included an appearance as musical director.

Tony was also a founding member of Maggie’s Dream, whose debut album was released by Capitol Records. Blending urban funk and hard rock, the band developed a sound that was ahead of its time.

Tony’s work has also included composing and musical direction. For Raksha’s Child, performed by Urban Youth Theater as part of New York’s Henry Street Settlement, Tony served as composer and musical director. His work earned a “Meet the Composer” grant and special mention from The New York Times.

As a solo artist, Tony released his self-titled album in 2006, featuring multi-platinum artist Billy Squier and Grammy Award-winning producer and guitarist Larry Mitchell. Producer and musician John Kurzweg contributed backing vocals to the work that earned Tony a Los Angeles Music Award nomination for Male Singer/Songwriter of the Year. Tony continues to pursue songwriting and performance, including an appearance at the 2026 Opelika Songwriters Festival. His work was also recognized in Nashville Scene’s People 2025 issue.

Voice, Storytelling, and Production

Tony’s creative work extends beyond the stage and recording studio. For four years, he served as the male voice of PBS Kids Sprout, bringing his voice to a network devoted to young children. His voiceover credits also include numerous Scholastic audiobooks featuring authors such as Beverly Cleary and Virginia Hamilton, as well as classic stories and biographies of notable historical figures.

Behind the scenes, Tony has worked in live entertainment production and camera work on productions featuring artists including Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Foo Fighters, Keith Urban, Charli XCX, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Jelly Roll, Lady A., and Maggie Rogers.

His television performance appearances include The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, The Jon Stewart Show, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Roseanne, Top of the Pops, and the Jerry Lewis Telethon.

Always Exploring What’s Possible

From children’s television to theater, from songwriting to major live productions, Tony James’s career reflects a curiosity that has taken him across creative boundaries. The common thread is a commitment to performance, collaboration, and the power of music and storytelling to bring people together.

For Tony, the work has never been about fitting into one box. It has been about exploring what becomes possible when creativity is allowed to move freely between them.
